NBA Summer League Tweaks and Schedule

By Kenneth Teape (@teapester725)

This summer the NBA will put in place new provisions in their summer league as a champion will be crowned for the first time. The NBA tweaked the league as preliminary games will be followed by a single-elimination style tournament to crown a champion.

This is an interesting spin to add to the summer league, which has boomed in popularity recently. Last year’s summer league broke records with 24 teams participating, more than 51,000 people attending the 10-day event, 60 games played, 38 live television broadcasts and participation of top draft picks (13 of the top 14 picks took part). This season some of those numbers can actually be surpassed. With the games being played in Las Vegas it is the only chance for people in the area to see some talent for their favorite NBA teams.

The schedule will tip-off on July 12th and will run through July 22nd when the championship game is held. All teams taking part in the summer league will play a minimum of five games, with July 16th marking the start of the single-elimination tournament. The teams will be seeded that day and play until the champion is crowned the 22nd.

Last year Damian Lillard dominated, averaging 26.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists en route to co-MVP honors with former Memphis Grizzlies guard Josh Selby, who averaged 24.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Some other standouts from last season included the Phoenix Suns Kendall Marshall, who averaged a league high 6.5 assists per game and Malcolm Thomas of the Chicago Bulls, who averaged a league high 12.0 rebounds.

Since its inauguration in 2004 the Summer League has been considered the best chance for young talent to showcase their skills to prospective teams looking for new players. The talent is high for the Summer League as well, as six of the last seven Rookie of the Year winners have participated; Chris Paul, Brandon Roy, Kevin Durant, Tyreke Evans, Blake Griffin, Kyrie Irving and Lillard last season.
