New York Yankees vs San Diego Padres Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 3 Padres 6

The New York Yankees were unable to come up with a win on Sunday, losing the rubber game of a three-game series series in San Diego against the Padres. The loss moves the Yankees to (57-53), and are now 9.5 games behind the division leading Boston Red Sox.

Phil Hughes was absolutely awful on Sunday, as his poor performance put the Yankees in a early hole that was just to much for them to get out of, and it gave Hughes his 10^th loss of the season. The Padres wasted little time getting to Hughes, as in the second inning they got three runs on a sac-fly by Mark Kotsay, and then a two-out RBI single by Everth Cabrera scored Chris Denorfia and Nick Hundley. In the third inning Hughes gave up two more runs, as Denorfia hit a sac-fly to score Alexi Amarista, and then Kotsay singled home Chase Headley, which led to Joe Girardi pulling Hughes out of the game. Hughes went only 2.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits, and two walks.

The New York Yankees were able to bounce back in the second game of the series against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night, with a shutout victory. The win moves the Yankees to (57-52), but they were unable to gain any ground in the AL East, as they still sit 8.5 games behind the first place Boston Red Sox.

After getting a horrible start from C.C. Sabathia on Friday night, Ivan Nova was exceptional on Saturday night, and picked up his fifth win of the season. Nova went seven shutout innings allowing only four hits, one walk, and struckout eight batters. With the good start Nova sees his ERA drop to 3.08, as he is quite possibly pitching better than ever right now.

The New York Yankees couldn’t keep up their momentum from a nice late-inning win in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, but on Friday night they were beaten pretty good by the San Diego Padres. The loss put the Yankees at (56-52), and are 8.5 games out of first place for the AL East.

For Yankees Starter C.C. Sabathia it was more of the same for him on Friday night against the Padres, as his struggles continue, and he picked up his 10^th loss of the season, with an ERA that is getting very close to five. The Padres wasted little time getting to Sabathia, as in the first inning with the bases loaded, Sabathia walked Yonder Alonso for the first run of the game. The second run of the first inning would come one batter later, as Jedd Gyorko grounded out to Sabathia, which allowed Chase Headley to score. The fourth inning the Padres would strike for two more, as Logan Forsythe hit a solo-home run, which was his fourth of the year and broke a 2-2 tie at the time. Later in the fourth inning Sabathia would hurt himself by not covering First Base on a ground ball by Andrew Cashner, which should have been an out, but instead Everth Cabrera hit a triple right after to score Cashner. The sixth inning would be the one where Sabathia made his exit, as after a Chris Denorfia hit a single that scored Nick Hundley, Sabathia was pulled from the game. Sabathia went 5.2 innings allowing five runs on 11 hits and three walks. In Sabathia's last three starts he has given up a total of 19 earned runs, and looks like a shell of his old self.

W2W4: New York Yankees vs San Diego Padres Series Preview

After a split in Los Angeles against the Dodgers to start the New York Yankees eight-game road-trip, the Yankees will now be in San Diego to start a three-game series against the Padres. The Yankees are now (56-51), which is 8.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East, and this looks to be a winnable series on paper against the Padres, who are just (50-59).

- Pitching Match-Ups

In Game 1 of the series it will be the struggling C.C. Sabathia (9-9, 4.65), who has lost three of his last four starts, and has given up seven runs in each of his last two starts, facing Andrew Cashner (7-5, 3.88). In Game 2 Ivan Nova (4-4, 3.41) will be on the mound facing Tyson Ross (2-4, 2.90), who has won his last two starts, only allowing one run in 14 innings. In Game 3 the Yankees will be facing a familiar face in Ian Kennedy (3-8, 5.23), who will making his debut with the Padres against his former teammate Phil Hughes (4-9, 4.58).
