New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 4 Tigers 8

The New York Yankees early season struggles continued on Saturday afternoon, as they lost their fourth game already this season, and are now in danger of being swept by the Detroit Tigers.

For the second straight day a Yankees starting pitcher was unable to make it thru five innings of work, on Saturday that was Phil Hughes. Hughes looked shaky early giving up a run in the first inning, but settled down until the fifth inning, when it all went downhill for Hughes. In the loss Hughes finished going only four innings, while allowing eight hits, and four runs, only three of which were earned due to an error by Jayson Nix in the first inning.

Tigers Starter Max Scherzer wasn’t great in this game either, but with the run support was able to pick up his first win of the season. Scherzer went five innings allowing four runs, five hits, and two walks, while striking out seven Yankee batters.

The Yankees bullpen once again struggled in this game, as Boone Logan, David Phelps, and Joba Chamberlain all struggled on Saturday. The three combined to pitch for four innings, while allowing four runs, nine hits, and three walks in what was a very ineffective day for the Yankees bullpen.

The top of the order for the Tigers once again got the best of Yankees pitching, as Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter both had multi-hit games for the second straight day. Jackson went three for five in the leadoff spot, while scoring each time he reached base, and Hunter also went three for five with two runs scored, and a RBI.

Last years Triple Crown and MVP winner in the American League Miguel Cabrera looked like he did most of last year in this game, as the Yankees couldn’t get arguably the best hitter in baseball out on Saturday. Cabrera went four for four at the plate, with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI.

Vernon Wells getting the start was able to get the Yankees on the board in the second inning with a solo homerun to left field, which was his second homerun of the season, as Wells went one for three, with a walk in the game.

Wells wasn’t the only new addition to the Yankees lineup to have an impact in this game, as First Baseman Lyle Overbay played very well. Overbay went two for four, with a big two out two run single in the sixth inning, which gave the Yankees life before the bullpen got shelled.

Kevin Youkilis continued his hot start to his Yankees career on Saturday, as Youkilis went one for two, with a double, walk, and run scored, as he is now batting .389 thru five games this season.

The Yankees will be looking to avoid the sweep on Sunday, as C.C Sabathia will look to rebound from his poor Opening Day start against Justin Verlander.
