New York Yankees vs. Milwaukee Brewers Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 5 Brewers 6

On Sunday afternoon the New York Yankees were unable to win the rubber-game of the inter-league series with the Milwaukee Brewers, as they lost on Sunday by a score of 6-5. The loss moves the Yankees to 19-17 on the season, which is 1.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.

Yankees Starter David Phelps struggled in his second start of the season, as even with a three-run lead handed to him in the first inning, Phelps got a no decision, as the bullpen let him down in relief. He finished going five innings allowing four runs on eight hits, three walks, and only struck out one batter.

Brewers starter Matt Garza didn’t fair much better on Sunday, as he had a tough first inning but did settle down afterwards. Garza finished going five innings allowing the three runs on six hits, and four walks. Kelly Johnson got the big hit off of Garza in the first, as he hit a ground-rule double to score two runs.

In the sixth inning the Yankees bullpen struggled after Phelps allowed back to back base-hits, as Matt Thornton came in and allowed an RBI single to Jonathon Lucroy. Dellin Betances quickly replaced Thornton, but after a pop-out bunt by Carlos Gomez, Betances gave up two more runs on a double by Logan Schafer, and then a RBI ground-out from Rickie Weeks, who had a nice day at the plate.

The Yankees would rally in the top of the ninth after being down to their final strike with Mark Teixeira at the plate. Teixeira would take Francisco Rodriguez deep to tie the game in the ninth, as it was his seventh homerun of the season, and a clutch hit if their ever was one.

Sadly for the Yankees despite the homerun from Teixeira in the ninth, they would not force extra innings, as Adam Warren couldn’t keep it a tie game in the bottom of the ninth. Warren would allow a double to Weeks, who then advanced to Third Base on a wild pitch. With Weeks on Third, Mark Reynolds was able to single him home to end the game in walk-off fashion and hand Warren his second loss of the season.

Next up for the Yankees will be the start of the Subway Series against the New York Mets on Monday night, as Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 4.43) will be facing off against Bartolo Colon (2-5, 5.36).

New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Angels

The New York Yankees had the tough task of traveling to the West Coast without getting an off-day, as on Monday the Yankees offense and bullpen looked like they forgot to make the trip to Los Angeles. The loss to the Angels moves the Yankees to percentage points behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East with a (16-15) record.

Getting his first start of the season, David Phelps was very good for the Yankees, even though he didn’t factor in the decision. Phelps went 5.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits and one walk, while throwing 87 pitches. The only problem Phelps had was in the fifth inning, as Ian Stewart was have an RBI ground-out.

Angels Starter Jered Weaver was fantastic against the Yankees, as he shutdown their offense and deserving picked up his third win of the season. Weaver went eight innings allowing just one run one six hits, one walk, and struck out seven batters.

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 5 Rays 11

Coming off a big night on offense in Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, it was the Yankees pitching staff that got shelled on Friday, as in the loss the Rays scored 11 runs. The loss moves the Yankees to (10-7) on the season, and they are still atop the AL East by one game.

The Yankees offense got off to a quick start for the second straight game, as they chased Rays Starter Erik Bedard from the game quickly. Bedard lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk.

Scott Sizemore was the man to do most of the damage off of Bedard, as in the second inning with the bases loaded, Sizemore cleared them with a three-run double. Later in the inning Sizemore would score on a Brett Gardner fielder’s choice.

New York Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees suffered a blowout loss in Game 2 of their series in Baltimore against the Orioles, as they lost 11-3. The loss moves the Yankees to (42-38) on the season, as they are now on a four-game losing streak, and closer to last place than first place in the tough AL East.

This game got out of hand early for the Yankees, as David Phelps had a disastrous start, which led to his fifth loss of the season, and may have cost him his spot in the rotation. Phelps made it just 2.1 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits, and two walks. The Orioles wasted little time getting to Phelps, as Adam Jones got their first run of the game with an RBI single, which scored Manny Machado. After Jones, Chris Davis smacked a three-run homerun for his 29^th home run of the season, and made it a 4-0 game. Phelps pitched a scoreless second inning, but in the third the Orioles broke it open. Former Yankee Chris Dickerson had a two-run base hit with the bases loaded to make it 6-0, and then Ryan Flaherty hit a three-run home run, which was his sixth of the year, and ended Phelps' day early.

Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees Post Game Recap

The New York Yankees were able to snap their two-game skid on Friday night, with a win over the Tampa Bay Rays to even their series up at a game a piece. The win moves the Yankees to (40-33) on the season, which is 3.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East.

The offense wasted little time getting on the board against Roberto Hernandez, as in the first inning Robinson Cano hit a sac-fly to score Brett Gardner for the first run of the game. Ichiro Suzuki would knock in the Yankees next run in the third inning on a RBI ground out, which scored Austin Romine. In the fourth inning the Yankees would load the bases with none out, but Jayson Nix grounded into a double-play, as Travis Hafner scored for the third run. With two outs and Lyle Overbay on Third Base, David Adams was able to have an infield single to score Overbay, and give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. The sixth inning is where the now legend of Zolilo Almonte began, as in his first major league start he hit his first career homerun off Hernandez, and gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead. Almonte in his first start was great, and it will be hard to imagine him out of the lineup on Saturday, as he went three for four on Friday. For Hernandez it is just yet another bad start in what has been a bad season, as he now has eight losses.

New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Angels Post Game Recap

The back end of the New York Yankees West Coast trip continues to give them a lot of problems, as they lost again to the Angels on Saturday night 6-2. The loss moves the Yankees to (37-31) on the season, and are now four games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East.

Yankees Starter David Phelps had a tough start on Saturday night against a very good Angels lineup, and picked up his fourth loss of the season. Eric Aybar got the Angels offense started in the second inning with a solo home run of Phelps, which was his second home run of the season. Albert Pujols would knock in the Angels second run of the game with a base hit scoring Mike Trout in the third inning. Aybar would get the best of Phelps again in the sixth inning with a RBI base hit to score Mark Trumbo. The last run charged to Phelps was given up by Shawn Kelley after a single from Peter Bourjos led to the end of the day for Phelps.

New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 2 Mariners 1

The New York Yankees were able to start of their West Coast trip very nicely, by winning three out of four games against the Seattle Mariners with a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The win keeps the Yankees in second place in the AL East, two games behind the Boston Red Sox.

David Phelps went toe to toe with one of the best pitchers in all of baseball in Felix Hernandez, and kept up with King Felix on Sunday. Phelps went six innings allowing only one run on three hits, and three walks. The Mariners one run against Phelps came in the second inning on a infield singe by Brendan Ryan, which scored Kelly Shoppach. Phelps also was able to strike out six batters, and this was his second straight great start after the disaster against the Mets.

Hernandez like Phelps also didn’t factor in the decision in this game, but he did pitch great for Seattle. King Felix went seven innings allowing just one run on five hits, two walks, and had seven strikeouts. The Yankees one run of Hernandez came in the second inning, as Brett Gardner knocked in Jayson Nix with a RBI single. Gardner had a great series in Seattle, as he went nine for 17 with four doubles.

David Robertson got the win for the Yankees, which was his fourth win of the year, but he had to escape some trouble in eighth. A lead off double by Alex Liddi and then a sac-bunt set the Mariners up with a runner on third with one out, but Robertson struckout Jason Bay and Nick Franklin to keep the game tied at one.

The Yankees would get the winning run across the plate in the top of the ninth inning, as Ichiro Suzuki walked to lead off the inning, and then was advanced to second by a bunt from Nix. With two outs Chris Stewart came up with a huge clutch base-hit to score Ichiro, and give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

The ninth inning was a difficult one for Mariano Rivera, but he was able to get out of jams to earn his 23^rd save of the inning. Kyle Seager lead off the inning with a base-hit, but didn’t last long on the bases, as Rivera got Kendrys Morales to ground into a double play. The Mariners would try to rally with two outs however, as Raul Ibanez walked, and Endy Chavez singled. Despite having two runners on Rivera settled down and got Michael Saunders to fly out to Left Field to end the game.

Next up for the Yankees will be a three-game series starting on Tuesday in Oakland against the Athletics, as C.C. Sabathia (6-4, 3.74) will be facing former Yankee Bartolo Colon (7-2, 3.14).

Cleveland Indians vs New York Yankees Post Game Recap

Final Score: Indians 3 Yankees 4

The New York Yankees were able to make it two straight wins over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, beating the Tribe by a score of 4-3. The win moves the Yankees to (33-25) on the season, and keeps them 2.5 games back of the Boston Red Sox for the division lead.

For the second straight game the Yankees were able to get to and Indians Starter, this time being Scott Kazmir, who suffered his third loss of the season. Ichiro got the big third inning started for the Yankees with an RBI single knocking in Lyle Overbay for the first run of the game. The rest of the damage the Yankees would do in this game came a few batters later, when Mark Teixeira hit his second home run of the season and the second in as many days. Teixeira's three-run homerun scored Ichiro, and Jayson Nix, while giving the Yankees a nice four-run lead. Kazmir's final line was six innings, while allowing the four runs, on seven hits,and two walks, but he did strikeout seven batters.

New York Mets vs. New York Yankees Post Game Recap

Final Score: Mets 9 Yankees 4

After two low scoring Mets wins in Citi Field, the Subway Series went back to the Bronx for Game 3, where the Mets offense erupted and took the third game, which ensures themselves victory in the Subway Series for 2013. The loss for the Yankees makes it their first four-game losing streak of the season, and on the other hand the Mets seem to have something going winning four straight games.

This game seemed to be over in the top of the first inning, as Yankees Starter David Phelps had the worst start of his career in a game the Yankees and their fans certainly wanted. Phelps got just one out in the first inning, while allowing five runs on four hits, and two walks before being pulled for Preston Claiborne. Phelps did get hit with a line drive in his last start, but said it wasn’t bothering him before the start; clearly something was not right for Phelps however on Wednesday night.

The Yankees and Mets will be taking part in the 17^th regular season Subway Series starting tonight in a four-game series with each team getting two home games.  The first two will be at Citi Field in Queens, with the last two being in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium.  No matter how well or poorly each team is playing, this series always generates a lot of buzz throughout the baseball world and especially in New York, when the state is split in two for a couple days as everyone picks their allegiances to either squad.

The New York Yankees were able to start their weekend series in Tropicana Field with a win Friday night over the Tampa Bay Rays behind a good offensive performance. The win moves the Yankees to (29-18) on the season, and they are still one game ahead of the Boston Red Sox.

Yankees Starter David Phelps has seemed to gain a stranglehold on the fifth spot in the rotation, as he picked up his third win of the season on Friday night. Phelps was cruising in the game until the sixth inning, but with an eight run lead the game was never in jeopardy for Phelps. He finished the game going 7.2 innings allowing four runs on on six hits, with three strikeouts. Ivan Nova was back with the Yankees, but instead of getting the start was sitting in the bullpen, so it would appear that Joe Girardi will be sticking with Phelps for the foreseeable future.

The New York Yankees were able to win their second straight game against the division rival Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon with an impressive seven to two victory. The win keeps the Yankees atop the AL East with a (27-16) record.

The Yankees were led by a strong start from David Phelps for the third straight game, as he earned his second win of the season. Phelps, who is battling for a rotation spot is certainly earning it by the way he is pitching lately, as on Saturday he went seven innings allowing only one run on six hits, three walks, and was able to strikeout eight batters in large part due to his great command of his off-speed pitches. In Phelps' last four starts he has an ERA of 2.84, which is pretty good for a fifth starter.

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians Game 1 Recap

Final Score: Yankees 0 Indians 1

The New York Yankees after sweeping the Kansas City Royals had their five game winning streak snapped by the Cleveland Indians on Monday afternoon in Game 1 of the afternoon double header. The loss moves the Yankees to (23-14) on the season.

Indians Starter Justin Masterson was masterful against the Yankees earning his sixth win of the season. Masterson went the distance for a complete game shutout, only allowing four hits, three walks, and was able to strikeout nine batters including Vernon Wells to end the game.

David Phelps did his best to keep up with Masterson, but had one mistake pitch which cost him the game. For Phelps it is his second loss of the season, as he went 6.2 innings allowing only one run on a Jason Kipnis solo-homerun in first inning which ended up being the only run of the game. The battle for the fifth spot in the rotation has to be Phelps’ to lose now with another strong start today.

The New York Yankees were able to snap their two game losing streak on Wednesday night in Colorado against the Rockies a day after being shutout. The offense wasn’t great, but with enough good pitching the Yankees got the win and move to (19-13) on the season.

David Phelps got the start for the Yankees, and with Ivan Nova on the disabled list, Phelps has a chance to prove that he should be the fifth starter in the rotation. Phelps came out with a strong out against a good Rockies lineup in the no decision. He went six innings allowing just two runs on three hits, and one walk. The only mistake for Phelps came in the second inning, when he allowed a two-run homerun to Todd Helton.

The New York Yankees were able to start the month of May with their second straight win over the Astros, which gives them the series win. Despite all the injuries the Yankees still find ways to win and are (17-10) on the year.

David Phelps getting the chance to be the fifth starter in the Yankees rotation didn’t do a very good job to solidify his spot in the rotation. Phelps was given a four run lead, but couldn’t hold it, which is something a pitcher trying to be in the rotation has to do. Phelps finished the game going 5.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits, and one walk, in what was a sub-par start from him.

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays Post Game Recap

Final Score: Yankees 4 Blue Jays 8

The New York Yankees were unable to sweep the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon, but they took two out of three games against them. The Yankees have been rolling despite the loss on Sunday, as they have won two out of three games in their last three series, and that has gotten them a record of (10-7) after the bad first week.

Yankees Starter Ivan Nova’s tough beginning to the season didn’t get any easier in Toronto, as he once again didn’t pitch well, but on the bright side for Nova he didn’t get a loss just a no-decision. Nova went only five innings allowing four runs on seven hits, and four walks. Pitch count was once again a problem for Nova, as he threw a whopping 32 pitches in the first inning, and after that it was clear he wasn’t going to make it very deep into the game.

Nova wasn’t the only Yankees pitcher who struggled in this one, as David Phelps had a rough appearance out of the bullpen. Phelps went the final three innings for the Yankees, but allowed three runs on three hits, and two walks. Phelps ERA is at 6.23 so far this season, which is about three points higher than he finished last year. For Phelps the big mistake came in the seventh inning, when Blue Jays Catcher J.P Arencibia hit a two-run homerun for his seventh homerun already this season.

The Yankees offense was started by backup Catcher Chris Stewart, who for being a defensive Catcher is hitting the ball very well to start the season. Stewart hit a solo homerun in the third inning, which was his first homerun since July 28th of last season. He finished the game going two for three at the plate, and is now hitting .353 on the season.

The top of the order for the Yankees was great in this game, but despite the top three hitters all having multi-hit games they only combined for one run scored. Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, and Vernon Wells all had two hits, but only Cano was able to touch home plate. Wells capped off a great series in Toronto going seven for 15 at the plate, and got a ton of boos from his former home crowd.

The main reason for the Yankees top of the order not scoring in this game was that Travis Hafner really struggled with runners in scoring position. Hafner went zero for three at the plate with RISP, and the Yankees in as a whole went 1 for 12, which just won’t get the job done.

Next up for the Yankees will be a trip down to Tampa Bay to play the Rays, as C.C Sabathia (3-1, 2.57 ERA) will be facing Matt Moore (3-0, 1.00 ERA) in what should be a good pitchers duel.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Yankees

The New York Yankees were unable to complete the sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night. The Yankees loss snaps their three-game winning streak, but they were able to take two out of three games against the Diamondbacks, which is nothing to be ashamed of.

Yankees Starter Phil Hughes, who gave up a combined eight earned runs in his first two starts of the season, looked much better on Thursday, as he comes back from his neck injury. Hughes in the no-decision went seven innings only allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six batters. The long ball, which plagued Hughes last season seems like it will always be a problem for Hughes in Yankees Stadium. He is a fly ball pitcher, and he gave up two on Thursday to Didi Gregorious and Martin Prado, but on the bright side they were both just solo shots.

The New York Yankees fell to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon, as the Yankees four game winning streak came to an end, and with the loss Sunday will be rubber game of the first series between these two teams.

Yankees Starter Phil Hughes got roughed up in his second start of the season, and for the second time couldn’t make it to the fifth inning, as he doesn’t look right due to missing a lot of spring training with the neck injury. Hughes went only three innings, while allowing five runs on nine hits, and two walks. Giving up homeruns was a problem for Hughes last year, and on Saturday it was one again, as he gave up three solo-homeruns to Ryan Flaherty, Nick Markakis, and Nolan Reimold.

The New York Yankees early season struggles continued on Saturday afternoon, as they lost their fourth game already this season, and are now in danger of being swept by the Detroit Tigers.

For the second straight day a Yankees starting pitcher was unable to make it thru five innings of work, on Saturday that was Phil Hughes. Hughes looked shaky early giving up a run in the first inning, but settled down until the fifth inning, when it all went downhill for Hughes. In the loss Hughes finished going only four innings, while allowing eight hits, and four runs, only three of which were earned due to an error by Jayson Nix in the first inning.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Post Game Recap

Final Score: Red Sox 2 Yankees 8

The New York Yankees didn’t get off to a good start on Opening Day with their injury depleted team, as the Boston Red Sox handed the Yankees their first loss of the season in convincing fashion.

The Yankees Ace and Opening Day Starter C.C. Sabathia, who is expected to carry the Yankees rotation, did not look good at all in his first start. Sabathia really struggled with his control, and his fastball was lackluster, as he had problems getting it over 91 mph, which made his changeup ineffective with only a five to six mph difference between the two pitches. Sabathia only went five innings, while giving up eight hits, four walks, and four runs, while striking out five in the loss.
