Boston Celtics vs. Brooklyn Nets Post Game Recap

Final Score: Celtics 96 Nets 104

For the first time this season the Brooklyn Nets are now on a winning streak with their victory at home against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. The 104-96 win at the Barclays Center moves the Nets to (7-14) on the season, and puts them just two games back of lead in the Atlantic Division.

- Positives

Quite possibly the biggest positive of all season so far for the Nets was the return of Deron Williams, who played in his first game since November 20th due to an ankle injury. Despite missing a lot of time so far this season Williams did not look rusty in the win, and in fact looked like the Williams of the second half of last season. Williams finished with 25 points on 10 for 16 shooting, and also dished out seven assists.

Knicks Steamroll Nets to Snap 9-Game Losing Streak

It was not the matchup people had expected coming into the season as the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets faced off for the first time this season with less than stellar records. The Knicks came in on a nine-game losing streak and a 3-13 record, while the Nets were not much better at 5-13. It had the makings of an ugly game as both teams are dealing with injuries to important players; Tyson Chandler for the Knicks, Paul Pierce and Deron Williams for the Nets. The head coaches were also coming under fire as Mike Woodson seemed to be on the hottest of seats of any NBA coach and Jason Kidd was making headlines for demoting his top assistant Lawrence Frank earlier in the week. An ugly game is exactly what it turned into, at least for one of the teams.

The Knicks came out and played by far their best game of the season, blowing the Nets out 113-83 at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, which has become their home away from home. The Knicks fans far outnumbered the Nets fans as multiple Knicks chants were heard throughout the night as the Knicks led wire-to-wire.

The Knicks came out of the gate on fire, going ahead by as many as 15 in the first quarter as they shot an otherworldly 71 percent in the quarter. The most shocking part of the building of the lead was how little of it was done by the Knicks leading scorer Carmelo Anthony. Too often this season the Knicks have relied on Anthony to carry them to victory but tonight the rest of the players stepped up as Anthony had two assists and a rebound before even attempting his first shot of the game with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. The leading man for the Knicks in the first quarter instead was Andrea Bargnani, who scored seven of his 16 points in the opening quarter of the game. Anthony finished with a highly efficient night on the offensive end, scoring a team high 19 points on eight of 12 from the field to go along a team leading 10 rebounds and six assists. All of this game in a limited night of work for Anthony, who like many of the Knicks regulars got to sit the whole fourth quarter with the game comfortably in hand.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Toronto Raptors

Post Game Recap

The Brooklyn Nets came into Toronto with a 5 game losing streak and left with a 1 game winning streak; defeating the Raptors 102-100.

The Nets had a 15 point lead with under  4 minutes to go in the  4^th quarter and had to survive a late run by the Raptors to come away with the win. It certainly brought back flashes of the game vs. the Bulls in the playoffs as the Nets fumbled the ball away on 3 possessions and suffered a shot clock violation with under  1 minute to go.

Luckily for the Nets, Amir Johnson who is shooting 27% from beyond the arc shot a 3 on the final possession which ended in a miss in a head scratching play drawn up by Raptors head coach Dwayne Casey. But the Nets will take a win at this point anyway they can.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Post Game Recap

Once again the Brooklyn Nets were without all stars Deron Williams and Brook Lopez. Not that they would’ve made a difference tonight as the Timberwolves annihilated the Nets, 81-111. They fall to 3-9 on the young season.

The Nets scored first, Garnett hit a jump shot to take a 2-0 lead. That would be the last time the Nets would have the lead in this game. It was your typical definition of a blowout in which the Nets waived the white flag in the 3^rd quarter, bringing in their bench.

Kevin Love had 11 rebounds in the 1^st quarter alone. He was untouched on a few offensive put backs as well. The Nets just played without passion which is a theme dating back to last season for them. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were supposed to fix this problem with the passion and intensity they play with. They have not.

The Nets were just out played at every level and the Timberwolves were clearly the more aggressive team. For the game, the Nets had just 7 assists to 20 turnovers.

Jason Kidd’s seat continues to grow hotter despite the injuries excuse. If Kidd can’t get this team to play with maximum effort night in and night out, he might be the one who gets outted. We know Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov does have a trigger finger for firing coaches early such as last year with Avery Johnson.

However, it’s all still fixable. The NBA season is long and grueling. Deron and Brook will hopefully return soon and Kidd is still learning on the job. This team always had the makeup of a better playoff team than regular season team and in the Eastern Conference; making the playoffs isn’t tough.

Nets Blown Out by Kings

Brooklyn Nets vs. Sacramento Kings

The Brooklyn Nets opened up their west coast road trip with a 86-107 loss to the Sacramento Kings. This snapped the Kings 5 game losing streak.

Brook Lopez was the high man for the Nets with 16 points. Deron Williams and Shaun Livingston were next at 13 a piece.

The Kings won in spite of DeMarcus Cousins being in foul trouble the entire game; playing only 22 minutes total. Cousins still managed to score 15 points and grab 9 rebounds. Greivis Vasquez had his best game as a King against the Nets, scoring 17 and had 12 assists. Marcus Thornton came off the bench for the first time this season for the Kings and put in 24 points.

Nets Fall to Unbeaten Pacers

Coming off a depressing defeat to the Washington Wizards in overtime, the Nets did not right the ship in Brooklyn against the Pacers; losing 96-91 on Saturday. Both teams were on the second half of  a back to back. The Nets had an opportunity to send the game into overtime in the final seconds but Joe Johnson couldn't connect with an open look from 3.

MVP Candidate Paul George put in 24 points and was clutch down the stretch hitting big shots. David West put in 18 points as well, and seemed to have an open jump shot the entire night. Whether giving West that shot was by design or simply missed assignments I couldn't tell as it happened so often.

Positives -

The Brooklyn Nets bench continued to impress. Thought to be their weakness going into the season has turned into one of their strengths. It was their bench that saved the Nets from the game turning into a blowout early in the first quarter. Mason Plumlee out worked his counterpart Ian Mahimi for 3 rebounds and 6 points. Livingston showed once again that he can run the 2nd unit effectively. Unfortunately, other than the stretch of play in the 1st and 2nd quarter, the 2nd unit was not seen again.

Brook Lopez fended off Roy Hibbert fairly well. Hibbert shot 7-17 from the field and finished with 15 points. Post defense against elite centers is something Lopez has struggled with. Lopez was dominated by Marc Gasol and DeMarcus Cousins a season ago, so it's nice to see improvement. Hibbert's not exactly the offensive dynamo like those two, but Lopez made Hibbert work on every shot.

Negatives -

Kevin Garnett continued his struggles on the court. He shot 3-7 from the field for 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 turnovers. Garnett missed a couple of routine jump shots that he normally drills. This has been a theme so far in the early season and hopefully it can be fixed shortly.

 The Nets continued their late game struggles as they did against the Wizards. After managing to cut down the Pacers 4th quarter lead of 10 to 2, the Nets turned the ball over 3 times in the final 3 minutes of play. One was by Paul Pierce with under a minute to go as he was running to the corner in transition. Deron Williams also fouled George Hill on a 3 point shot with under 2 minutes to play. The Nets have been in games late 3 out of their 4 losses only to throw it away with bad mistakes.

Hopefully with time and as chemistry develops between the new pieces the Nets acquired, they'll be able to fix these late game issues.

Breaking Down the Nets/Celtics Trade

After the first round of the NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics have agreed in principle to a trade that sends Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn according to Yahoo Sports.

What the Nets Get

A major deal that required Kevin Garnett to waive his no trade clause, which he did late Thursday night. This is has put the Celtics in full rebuilding mode, and expect them to trade Rajon Rondo later in the year as well.

For the Nets though, giving up 3 1^st round picks for three aging players? Pierce and Terry are both 35 and Garnett is 37 years old. However, all picks are expected to be non-lottery, which means they’re not as valuable as they would appear. So it’s not as bad as a negative as some are making it out to be.

Then we have the actual players that we gave up and their replacements. Is Kevin Garnett, even at his age, an upgrade over Reggie Evans, who started at power forward for most of the year for the Nets? Absolutely, a huge upgrade. Garnett is a better passer, a better defender, and of course, a better offensive player. Garnett has a great jump shot which will space the floor and allow Lopez to be much more effective than when he was paired with Evans. Garnett also brings the intangibles, he’s a natural born leader and has always been. He plays with maximum effort all the time, which not saying Evans didn’t, but some of this roster needs to start doing more often.

Next up is Paul Pierce replacing Gerald Wallace. Again, Pierce is a much better shooter than Wallace, so he’ll space the floor much better. However, Wallace is the better defender. The Nets will miss Wallace on defense and rebounding, but in scoring and passing, Pierce is superior. It’ll be interesting to see however who the Nets put on the oppositions best perimeter player, which was normally Wallace. Pierce at this point is a bit of a liability on defense, as is Joe Johnson, but hopefully Garnett will help protect the rim and Lopez will continue to develop his shot blocking to make up for Johnson and Pierce’s poor defense.

Jason Terry will most likely assume the role as Deron Williams’ back up and replace CJ Watson who will be lost to free agency. Again, the Nets lose perimeter defense, as Terry has difficulties on defense. But Terry is known for his big shot making, and can shoot off the dribble extremely well still.

The starting line up will be projected to be Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez. With Terry, MarShon Brooks, Mirza Teletovic, and Mason Plumlee off the bench.

With the addition of such aging players, it’s clear that the Nets have Championship or bust for the 2013-2014 NBA season. This means even MORE expectations for rookie head coach Jason Kidd. Already under what was called unrealistic expectations, Kidd will be expected to deliver a Championship this upcoming season. This could end with a short run of Kidd as the Nets’ head coach say the Nets lose in the 2^nd round of the playoffs which could easily happen.

If they don’t win a championship this upcoming season, the future is bleak. Terry, Garnett, Pierce, will all be another year older, and their play has already significantly downgraded. As well as Joe Johnson, who seems to have hit and past his prime already. Pierce’s contract expires after the 2013/2014 season, but Garnett’s and Terry’s do not expire till after the 2015/2016 season. Even with Pierce’s expiring contract, the Nets’ payroll will be roughly $84,000,000. Meaning they won’t be able to do anything in terms of free agency. After the 2015/2016, again, the Nets’ payroll will still be $62,000,000, tied up in Lopez, Johnson, and Williams. This means that after this crucial 2013/2014 season, the Nets will not be bad enough to get the few 1^st round picks they have left to be lottery picks, but they won’t be good enough to contend for a championship.

Even so, I still think this was a good trade for the Nets. The Nets as constructed with Gerald Wallace, would not contend for a Championship anyway, and they still wouldn’t be bad enough to get into the lottery. The Nets are trading away the next 3 years of being a 4-8 seed in the East, for a shot at being a 1-3 seed and a shot at the NBA Finals.

The trade makes them a better team for this year, and that’s all we can really ask for. They aren’t the favorites to win it all, but they’ve certainly gotten better, and anything can happen.

Nets Draft Mason Plumlee

With the 22^nd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft the Brooklyn Nets selected Mason Plumlee. Plumlee is a 6’-11” 23 year old from Duke University.

Strengths-
Plumlee brings great energy to a team that seemed to lack it against the Bulls in the playoffs. Along with his athleticism, Plumlee can finish explosively at the rim. Plumlee will also be a good rebounder for the Nets.

Weaknesses-
Unfortunately, Plumlee doesn’t have much of a post game and his mid-range jumper can only be called decent. He won’t space the floor if paired with Lopez like say Blatche did for the Nets this past season.

How He Fits-
Plumlee will most likely fill in for Andray Blatche who is a free agent as the back up center to Lopez. But don’t look for Lopez and Plumlee to be on the court together like Blatche and Lopez were seen doing, mostly in the playoffs. Plumlee doesn’t space the floor as well as Blatche, and doesn’t have much of an offensive game.

Overall, it’s a decent pick for the Nets given the spot they were in. With their starting five intact for the most part, rotational players is what they needed to draft and Plumlee can give the Nets 8-14 minutes a game.

Is Jason Kidd the Right Hire?

Jason Kidd has become a candidate for the Brooklyn Nets head coach position. Kidd played with the Nets from 2001 to 2008 and led the Nets to the finals for the first time in franchise history. Kidd now looks to jump into his next career just a week after retiring as a player from the NBA.

Kidd has no coaching experience but he was one of the most intelligent players to ever play the game. When talking with past teammates, they rave about his leadership in the locker room. These qualities combined with the respect a first ballot hall of famer would get from any NBA locker room make Kidd a seemingly great head coach. However, no coaching experience does raise concerns, especially for a team with such high expectations as the Nets.

Another coach who had no prior coaching experience before being hired was Mark Jackson. Jackson was hired by the Warriors in 2011. Like Kidd, Jackson was a former player and has a great sense of the game. However, unlike Kidd, Jackson did not jump into coaching right after his playing days were over. Jackson became an analyst for both YES Network and ESPN for 6 years. This gave Jackson time to adjust and learn as he normally worked with former Knicks and Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy. Jackson has had success thus far in his coaching career, getting the Warriors to the 2^nd round of the playoffs this year.

If the Nets do select Kidd as their head coach, it is speculated that he’ll have an experienced staff around him. Target to be an assistant already is Lawrence Frank who was the Nets head coach from 2004-2010 before he was fired. Frank coached Kidd, and has come out in support of Kidd’s decision to pursue coaching. The Nets would be foolish not to insure experience around Kidd to make up for his lack in experience.

Hiring Kidd is not only risky to the Nets, it is risky to Kidd as well. With high expectations for the next few seasons, the Nets are trying to contend for a championship. The Nets at this time do not seem to have a roster to comply with these demands despite expectations. With over $70,000,000 tied up in just four players for the next 3 years, roster moves are limited. The success of the Nets will have to depend on the health of Brook Lopez, the hopeful resurrection of Gerald Wallace, the inconsistent isolation prone Joe Johnson, and their all-star guard Deron Williams. If Kidd were to take over and only get to the 1^st round of the playoffs each year, he would most certainly be fired by trigger happy owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Prokhorov has already been through two coaches, Avery Johnson whom was fired mid-season, and P.J. Carlesimo, who led the Nets to the 4^th seed in the east an a 1^st round exit.

If Kidd is fired due to these seemingly unreasonable expectations, he may not get another head coaching job for quite a while. It may be safer for both parties to go with a more proven coach at this current time. Frontrunner still is Pacers assistant head coach Brian Shaw who has many years of experience as an assistant with Phil Jackson.

Jason Kidd may end up being a fantastic head coach, but at this time, with this Nets organization, the reward doesn’t seem worth the risk.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Chicago Bulls Game 6

Final Score: Nets 95 Bulls 92

The Brooklyn Nets were able to win their first game in Chicago this season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time than with their backs against the wall facing elimination in the playoffs. The win moves the series back to Brooklyn for a win or go home Game 7 on Saturday night, in what should be a great game at the Barclays Center.

Positives:

- The Nets on offense were surprisingly well balanced, with five players including four starters scoring more than 15 points, which is something that hasn’t happened much at all this season. Deron Williams with Kirk Hinrich missing the game with a calf injury was able to notch his 22nd postseason double-double. Williams finished with 17 points on five for 12 shooting, and dished out 11 assists. The three-point shot wasn’t great for Williams in this one however, as he went just one for four from deep.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Chicago Bulls Game 5 Recap

Final Score: Bulls 91 Nets 110

The Brooklyn Nets after a horrific triple-overtime loss in Game 4, which was by far their worst loss of the season, and probably one of the worst losses in playoff history, were somehow able to bounce back at home and avoid elimination. The Nets win in game 5 at the Barclays Center will send the series back to Chicago, and the Nets will have to win again to push a Game 7.

Positives:

- Nets All-Star Center Brook Lopez has probably been the Nets most consistent and best player throughout this series, and that continued in Game 5. Lopez finished with a game-high 28 points on 11 for 20 shooting, and 10 rebounds. Lopez has really stepped up his play from a great regular season, as he’s averaging more points, rebounds, and blocks per game in the series against the Bulls. 

- With Bulls Starting Point Guard Kirk Hinrich missing Game 5 with a calf injury it allowed Deron Williams to have a nice game, as Hinrich has quietly had a great series against Williams. Deron was able to finish with 23 points on six for 14 shooting, with 10 assists. Williams has had a very up and down series so far, but when he plays well the Nets win, so the Nets will need two more good games from Williams which is something he is certainly capable of doing.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Chicago Bulls Game Three Recap

Final Score: Nets 76 Bulls 79

The Brooklyn Nets suffered their second straight playoff loss to the Chicago Bulls, and now trail in the best of seven series two games to one, as a combination of good Bulls defense and bad Nets offense has the Nets heading into a very important Game Four on Saturday afternoon.

Positives:

- For the second straight game there wasn’t many positives for the Brooklyn Nets, but Brook Lopez was one of the few Nets who did come thru with a nice game. Lopez scored a team-high 22 points on eight for 16 shooting, while grabbing nine rebounds, and blocking a ridiculous seven shots. As good, as Lopez was offensively he may have looked the best he did all season on the defensive end against All-Star Center Joakim Noah. Lopez held Noah to one point on zero for seven shooting, and although Noah is clearly hurt, it was an impressive job by Lopez.

For the Nets Game Two was the polar opposite of Game One in the series against the Bulls, and that led to Brooklyn’s first loss of the Postseason. Splitting the series at home now means the Bulls have the home court advantage over the Nets. 

Positives:

- In what was a very bad loss for the Nets there wasn’t many bright spots, but Brook Lopez did play a good game, and kept the Nets in it with most players in the starting lineup struggling with their shots. Lopez finished with a game-high 21 points on seven for 14 shooting to go along with five rebounds, and three blocks.

Game One Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets Post Game Recap

Final Score: Bulls 89 Nets 106

The Brooklyn Nets were able to take game one of the series with the Bulls in convincing fashion at the Barclays Center. Brooklyn fans came out for the “Brooklyn Blackout”, and gave the building a good playoff atmosphere in the win. Next game for Brooklyn will be on Monday night, and Joakim Noah who suited up for the Bulls on Saturday night but only played 13 minutes is expected to play in Game Two.

Positives:

- As its been for most of the second half of the season the Nets were led by Point Guard Deron Williams in the Game One win. Williams finished with a team-high 22 points on nine for 15 shooting, which included going two for three from behind the three-point line. Williams also added seven assists, and three steals to round up what was a very good first Playoff game on the Nets.

NBA Playoffs Round One 

Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets Series Preview

The Brooklyn Nets will be hosting the Chicago Bulls at the Barclays Center for Game One of the first round Eastern Conference Playoffs on Saturday at 8pm, and there will be a lot of things to keep and eye on.

- The major question coming into this series has been the one the Bulls have had for the last two months or so, will Derrick Rose play? The Bulls star Point Guard has been cleared to play and has been working out before games, but has yet to step on to the court. If Rose decides to suit up for the playoffs it would be hard to say how effective he’d be or how long he could even play, but there would be no doubt it would be a huge boost to a Bulls team that has been ravaged by injuries this season.

Detroit Pistons vs. Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets finished up their first regular season in their new home on a positive note by beating the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. The Nets finished their first season in Brooklyn with a (49-33) record, which gave them home court in the first round, as they are the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. 

Positives:

Interim Head Coach P.J. Carlesimo did a pretty solid job for Brooklyn after filling in for the fired Avery Johnson. Carlesimo finished the season with a (34-19), and that record is the best start for any coach in Nets franchise history. Carlesimo’s future with the Nets is unknown, as the Nets front office has made no commitment to him, but he’s got them ready to go for a big playoff series with the Chicago Bulls, and he’s done a great job getting the Nets to their regular season expectations.

The Brooklyn Nets were able to have a comeback win over the Washington Wizards on Monday night, as despite resting the Big 3 along with a few others, Brooklyn’s normal bench players stepped into the starting lineup, and played good games.

Positives:

With the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference already locked up, with no way of moving up or down in the standings, Head Coach P.J. Carlesimo had the luxury of resting some of his core players. Carlesimo sat four normal Starters in Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Reggie Evans, and Brook Lopez. He also gave Keith Bogans, whose been dealing with a sore back, and Jerry Stackhouse the night off.

Final Score: Nets 87 Raptors 93

After a big win on Friday night against the Indiana Pacers the Brooklyn Nets had a let down on Sunday afternoon losing to the Raptors, and with the loss the Nets are now locked into the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Positives:

Deron Williams was once again awesome for Brooklyn in the loss, as his great game was a main reason that the Nets were able to come back in this one, and attempt to make a comeback after being down by as many as 21. Williams finished the game with a team-high 30 points on 11 for 20 shooting, and dished out seven assists. Williams also had his second dunk of the season, which is a good sign heading into the playoffs that his legs are healthy, as he said earlier this season that he couldn’t dunk due to his ankle problems.

The Brooklyn Nets picked up a big win on Friday night against the likely third seed in the Eastern Conference in the Indiana Pacers. The win by Brooklyn guarantees that in just their first season in their new home the Nets will have home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Positives:

As it has been most of the second half of the season the Nets were led by Point Guard Deron Williams, and the win against the Pacers was in large part due to the great play from Williams. Williams scored a game-high 33 points on 10 for 23 shooting to go along with 14 assists. 20 of Williams points came in the second quarter making it the third time this season that he has scored 20 or more points in a quarter. Williams was unable to finish the game however, as in the final minute he hurt his left knee, and was forced to leave the game with a limp to the locker room.

The Brooklyn Nets were able to head up to Boston and take the season series against the Celtics with the win on Wednesday. It is the first time the Nets have won the season series against the Celtics since the 05-06 season, as every win counts for Brooklyn now, as they look to grab the fourth seed, and home court in the first round.

Positives:

- The Nets were led to the win in this game by Point Guard Deron Williams, whose high level of play has been consistent in the second half of the season. Williams scored a game-high 29 points on nine for 18 shooting, with 12 assists, and four rebounds. Williams only went one for six from behind the three-point line, but the one three-pointer that Williams hit allowed him to pass Kerry Kittles for most three-pointers in a season with 159.
